Everyone Needs A Therapist.

I posted on Facebook yesterday about going to a therapist. I have said in the past and will continue to say – loud and proud – I have seen my therapist for the last five years or so. While I do understand there still may be a stigma (although not sure why) – around mental health and seeing a therapist – I will advocate until I’m blue in the face how important it has been in my life. I think everyone – EVERYONE – should see a therapist. Talking to an objective third party about your “stuff” helps you navigate through it. Everyone has stuff – some more than others. And anyone that says they don’t have stuff, well, I think they have more stuff than anyone. Therapy has taught me a lot about how my behavior impacts my world. It has taught me to be incredibly more self aware. Imagine if everyone in this world was more self aware? What a kinder place we would be in!

I believe your mental health goes hand in hand with your physical health. Stress manifests itself in physical ways. Headaches, aches, pains, and so on. Can’t lose weight? It may not be diet or exercise that’s causing it – start working on liking yourself (i.e. mental health), and you will be shocked at how much easier it is to get fit.

I struggled (and still do some days) with anxiety and believe it or not, depression. Most people would find this hard to believe, but there are some days, I go to a very dark place. I think most people can relate to this. The more I opened up about my anxiety, the more I realized how not alone I was. So, I feel the same way about therapy. I’ve said before that if my posts positively affect even one person and encourages them to do something they wouldn’t otherwise have felt comfortable doing… or maybe helps them to not feel alone, then writing about it is worth it.

Life can be hard. No doubt about it, but it’s easier (I think anyway), when you have someone to help you navigate the hard and unpack the bullshit that life can pile on.
